Snowstorms and Air Conditioners

March 17, 2016

We haven’t completely escaped winter in Bloomfield just yet. Mother Nature may have a few nice days, but she’s always prepped to remind us that she’s the boss. So when she does finally let up and it starts to warm up, read below so you won’t want to have to unexpectedly call a repairman out out for air conditioner service.

Heavy snowfall could bury your air conditioner in the snow, hurting its performance when the temperatures start to warm up for the season. Not to mention it can hinder a high-efficiency system from performing as such. The situation could become an even greater problem too if you don’t plan for it with an annual air conditioner service appointment.

There are things you can do as a homeowner to help your air conditioner run properly even though snow has fallen or could fall in the coming days and weeks.

  1. Maintain a 3-foot/1-meter clearance around your air conditioner. Inspect the area regularly to make sure that it stays clear and that there are no snow drifts or piles of debris that might have piled up during the winter.
  2. Contrary to what you may think, putting a cover over your air conditioner may end up doing more damage than you’d expect. A covered air conditioner can be inviting for rodents looking for shelter from the weather and start to call it home, possibly meaning damage to the system as they roam about.

While the weather in Bloomfield will more than likely go up and down over the last few days of colder temperatures, you can’t count out the chance of weather that can alter the performance of your air conditioner. At Stanford Heating & Cooling in Bloomfield, we are always available to take a look at any areas around your home or answer any of your questions, whether they’re about air conditioner service or adding a new system.
